If you're on an iqama (residence permit) in Saudi Arabia and planning to travel abroad, you can't just leave. You need an exit/re-entry visa first — and getting it wrong can cancel your residency.
Quick answer
A reentry KSA permit (Exit/Re-Entry visa) is the authorization every iqama holder needs to leave Saudi Arabia and come back legally. You apply through Absher (for individuals) or Muqeem (for employers) before you fly. There are two types: single and multiple. Fees are SAR 200 for a two-month single exit, with extra months and multiple-entry options costing more. If you leave the Kingdom without one, or let it expire while abroad, your iqama is automatically cancelled.
Who needs a reentry permit
Any foreign resident holding a valid iqama needs an exit/re-entry visa to travel out of Saudi Arabia and return on the same residency. This applies to workers, dependents, and domestic staff. Saudi citizens, GCC nationals, and visitors on tourist or business visas don't need one.
The sponsor (employer or head of household) issues it. If you're an employee, your company's Government Relations Officer (GRO) usually handles it on Muqeem. Dependents are processed by the sponsoring family member through Absher Afrad.
Since 2021 labor reforms, workers covered by the Labor Reform Initiative can request their own exit/re-entry permit through Absher without employer approval — the employer gets notified but no longer blocks it. Domestic workers and some sectors still need direct sponsor consent. [1][2]
Types, fees, and validity
Two options exist, and the pricing scales with duration:
- Single Exit/Re-Entry: SAR 200 for up to two months, plus SAR 100 for each additional month.
- Multiple Exit/Re-Entry: SAR 500 for up to three months, plus SAR 200 for each additional month. Lets you leave and return as many times as you want within the validity window. [3]
Your iqama must be valid for the entire permit duration. If your iqama expires in 40 days, you can't get a 60-day exit visa — the system blocks it. Renew the iqama first.
Watch out: The permit's validity starts from the issue date, not your departure date. If you issue it on Monday and fly Friday, you've already burned 4 days.
Fees are paid via SADAD using the invoice generated in Absher or Muqeem. Processing is near-instant once payment clears.
How to apply through Absher
For individual sponsors or workers eligible under the Labor Reform Initiative:
- Log into Absher Afrad (absher.sa) with your Nafath-verified account.
- Go to Services → General Services → Issue Exit/Re-Entry Visa.
- Select the dependent or yourself, choose single or multiple, enter the duration.
- Confirm, pay via SADAD, and download the PDF.
Employers use Muqeem (muqeem.sa) with similar steps for staff. The permit is linked electronically to your passport — no sticker, no stamp. Border officers scan and verify at the airport. Keep a PDF copy on your phone anyway. Systems go down.
What happens if it expires while you're abroad
This is where people get burned. If your exit/re-entry visa expires while you're outside Saudi Arabia, your iqama is cancelled automatically. You lose your residency status. To return, you'd need a new work visa and a fresh entry — essentially restarting the whole process. [2]
If you realize mid-trip that you'll overstay, your sponsor can apply for an extension through Absher or Muqeem before the expiry date. Extensions aren't guaranteed and cost extra per added month. Once the clock hits zero, no extension is possible.
Some embassies and Saudi missions abroad can help in genuine emergencies (medical, documented delays), but recovery is slow and uncertain. Don't rely on it.
Final-exit vs. exit/re-entry
Don't confuse the two. An Exit/Re-Entry keeps your iqama alive and lets you come back. A Final Exit cancels your iqama permanently — you leave Saudi Arabia and can only return on a new visa. Final exit is used when ending employment or leaving the Kingdom for good. Choosing the wrong one on Absher and confirming it is a nightmare to reverse, so read the screen twice before clicking.
